In Recent Years, Balisong Knives Have Gained a Great Deal of Popularity

A Balisong knife has a folder-type handle with two counterbalanced handles, either on either end of the same blade or on this and another blade. It is a folding pocket knife with two handles connected by a chain, also known as a butterfly knife or a fan knife.

The folding handle consists of two spring-loaded blades that are released from the handle when it is thrown in the air through an opening near the hinge.

If spread out, the handles give added leverage to flip it open since they can rotate around the tang for closing.  Each handle contains a pivot point where the balisong knife can be opened and closed. The handles' tangs are usually strung with the help of two pins which are threaded.

The History of Balisong Knives

First introduced to the Philippines in the mid-17th century, the balisong dates back to that time period. According to legend, street performers used balisong knives in their entertainment displays in the beginning. They were also used for agriculture, hunting, and fighting. The concept behind its appearance is one rooted in the history of the country.

In the years following the Spanish occupation, many European cultural customs were introduced to the Philippines, including swords and knives for military purposes. This technique was originally learned from soldiers, but was adapted to Filipino smugglers' needs. Hence, the balisong knife was produced.

FMA (Filipino Martial Arts) culture has been using butterfly or balisong knives since the early 1900s. Also, the knives used to teach knife-fu are commonly called Balisongs; they can also be used to defend yourself.

Tjiwan Darmadi, who was born in San Pedro, near Manila, created the first balisong knife. Modern balisongs can be mass-produced using injection molding techniques, instead of traditional filigree craftsmanship. These knives can thus be produced at a cost that is more affordable.

Due to the nature of the knife, certain safety precautions are required by law for users, such as the requirement to keep it in a sheath and never to cut anything else than the knife itself.

In addition to these features, Balisong Knives purchased before 1993 are not classified as dangerous weapons by the federal government. There are many types of butterfly knives. A butterfly knife, for instance, may have a blade made of titanium or carbon steel.
