The Karambit knife is a blade originating from Indonesia and was used for agricultural purposes. The shape of the Karambit is curved, usually with the edge on the top side of the curve. It is a slashing tool but can be used as a stabbing weapon in close combat situations too.
"Karambit" comes from an Indonesian word that means "to strike or hit something." It wasn't until around 1964 when American knife maker Bill Harsey first produced it commercially as an auto-opening blade-slitting machete and called it "the tiger knife."
In 1987 when Harsey patented his design and started making them he said they were primarily made to use while working in heavy brush or clearing land. Originally the knife had a wooden handle with a crook for turning it over. The maker could also make them out of steel with plastic grips when customers wanted them as non-locking machete knives.
In the late 1990s and 2000s, some designs were made with one side curved, to fit more comfortably in the user's hand, and it was called a "beau saber" after its designer in Indonesia. In 2010 the Karambit design was patented by American knife maker Lou Mascolo. The patent states that the blade had to be at least "one inch deep" and less than 1 inch wide.
Holding a Karambit Knife
There are several ways to hold the karambit. The most common is the forward grip where your hand wraps around and covers most of the blade edge. Your thumb should sit outside of your index finger with your index and middle fingers sitting on top of the blade. Your ring finger and pinkie finger sit inside on either side of your index finger. This is a very strong grip and can be used for the maximum amount of chopping force.
The reverse grip where your index finger is at the bottom of the thumb hole, your middle finger is on top of the blade, and your ring and pinkie fingers rest on either side of your middle finger. This grip places more of your weight on the backside of your hand and can also be used to stab.
Ways to Close a Karambit:
There are three different ways to close a karambit with one hand. You can use only two of your fingers to do it or combine both methods or even change which way you'll use each time you close it up.
Closing the knife with only two fingers can be used to cut or perform recovery maneuvers and is a quick way to dismember an assailant but not one of the best ways to disengage if a fight were to arise. While it may seem slow, combining both methods will allow you to close it in one motion instead of two.
First, you slide your fingers underneath the blade, pull the knife closed up along your arm, then push and pull out again in combination.
The second way combines both methods and works especially well for use in close quarters or on an opponent wearing body armor. This is because you can use your thumb for support and for leverage allowing you to overpower them when using this method.
The last method is to relax your grip on the handle and use only the blade to close it. This is a very fast way to put the karambit knife away, but if you're already in a close-quarters fight and need speed this may not be for you.
There are several other ways of holding a karambit knife as well. One is a reverse grip where your index finger is under the thumb hole, your middle finger rests on top of the blade, and your ring and pinkie fingers support either side of your middle finger. This can work well with fighting in tight quarters because it has more leverage than just two fingers resting underneath the blade.
Rules to Use Karambit Knife:
These knives can be very effective weapons. Criminals are especially fond of these types of knives due to their ability to be concealed on the body and their quick deployment time. These weapons are also available for purchase online or in stores, which makes them even more accessible. It is important you know the safety measures to use a karambit knife before you make the purchase.
The first rule to follow is never to bring your knife near an airport or any other place that might require you to enter a building with metal detectors. This is because your knife could set off the detectors and alert the authorities to your weapon.
Another very important rule is never to use your karambit in violent situations. Criminals use these knives to fight, but first, you need to know how to effectively use them and what they can do for you. You must know how to deliver a stabbing strike with this weapon so that you can be as serious as possible about using it for self-defense purposes.
Furthermore, if you are going to allow others on this knife training course, you must inform them that simply swinging the blade around will not cut materials like leather or break glass.
